Blackpool 2-0 Wimbledon

Blackpool move into the playoffs after routine win over under par Wimbledon thanks to a Gnanduillet brace.

Wimbledon looked to be an organised side to begin with, but as soon as Blackpool began to press, cracks started to appear. In the 7th minute Kaikai was given time and space to unleash a shot that thumped the underside of the bar. On the follow up, Delfouneso almost profited from Gnanduillet’s flick, but the ball ended up in the stands.

Wimbledon would recover though, but still could not muster any chances of their own. Blackpool continued to battle, with Kaikai firing over a free kick on 19 minutes and Virtue failing to get his body shape right when he was threaded through in the 21st minute. Virtue would get another chance minutes later, but could still only strike his half volley straight at the keeper.

Blackpool had the edge in the match, but were starting to fall out of their rhythm. Wimbledon even created a chance of their own, when Thomas drove forward and saw his shot initially spilled by Alnwick. Fortunately the goalkeeper was able to recover, but it was clear Blackpool had to re-establish their earlier dominance in the second half. The scores were level at the break, but Blackpool should have made the most of a impressive early attacking display.

Not to worry though. Blackpool took the lead early in the second half, just when Wimbledon looked to be getting a foothold in the match. Delfouneso slipped Gnanduillet through who made no mistake, thumping past the ‘keeper at his near post. Bloomfield Road erupted as the goal sent Blackpool back into the playoffs.

It was the perfect start to another dominant half of football from Blackpool. Wimbledon barely had a sight of goal with the Seasiders knocking the ball around effectively, but having to wait until the 81st minute before doubling their advantage.

Feeney was the provider this time, but it was once again the clinical Gnanduillet who would stroke home his and Blackpool’s second. Feeney burst down the right wing and from his cross, gave Gnanduillet the easiest of jobs to tap home.

Blackpool’s fortunes have really been turned around with recent performances and results, but Blackpool have still got a long way to go. It was a professional performance today, with a lack of such performances costing Blackpool last season. However, the true test comes with Ipswich next and whether the Seasiders can keep this run going and solidify their place in the playoffs, but today was yet another step in the right direction.
