It is finally here. Arsenal host Blackpool for the first time since their thrashing of the Seasiders in Blackpool’s solitary Premier League season. It comes after Blackpool were defeated for the first time in their Fylde Coast derby against Fleetwood, but will it be a case of what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger or will this prove to be a dent in confidence? They will surely be up for it, but if this will translate into the required result is without doubt another question.
Injuries and Suspensions:
Arsenal, particularly in defence, are experiencing a slight injury crisis currently. Both left backs Monreal and Kolasincac are out, with centre back Laurent Koscielny still not fit. Hector Bellerin was pulled from the match against Palace as a precaution and Carl Jenkinson can not return due to his long term injury.
Blackpool’s Donervon Daniels has been confirmed to be missing out as Jimmy Ryan remains injured also. Armand Gnanduillet will also be out due to his recent red card, a real kick in the teeth if the Seasiders are to play just the one up front.
Arsenal FC:
Unai Emery has done wonders for Arsenal this year in the post Wenger era, as he has led his side to fourth position in the Premier League. Despite a recent defensive crisis, with Xhaka having to slot in at left back last weekend against Palace, Arsenal are unbeaten in 12 and had won 11 in a row before this weekend’s result against Palace. Arsenal have been an exciting prospect so far and their attacking depth has been a real asset. Between them, Lacazette and Aubameyang have 11 goals, with Arsenal being associated with comebacks galore this season. In fact, if the table was solely based upon first half score lines this season The Gunners would sit in 17th position, showing how Emery has established a never say die attitude.
On Wednesday it will certainly be interesting to see how much Emery values this competition. The likelihood is that a few youngsters will be given runouts at the Emirates with major names on standby on the bench. In goal it is almost a formality that Cech will feature, but the back 4 remains a mystery due to their lack of numbers in that position. It could be left really quite weak and could be something Blackpool will look to exploit. The likes of Smith-Rowe are amongst the youngsters set to take part along with bigger names such as Ramsey and Mkhitaryan.
It will be intriguing to see how Blackpool cope and let’s remember, all of the pressure is on Arsenal. An upset here, although improbable, would be catastrophic for Arsenal.
